Niche Marketings Gold Standard: Keyword research at its very best.

Follow me as I select real live domains to find a hot niche keyword.

In stage 1 of How to Find a Niche market I explained how Google Keywords Tool could find you find keyword phrases absolutely free and I used it to find keyword phrases for my Angry Bird sites.

In stage 2 I used Micro Niche Finder to Find a Profitable Keyword to use for my new Angry Birds Blog and my already stablished Instant Niche Maker site

In stage 3 A Profitable Niche I checked out those results through in Traffic Travis to find how much competition there is for them and if I can use these terms to get the site on the front page of Google.

At each stage I got a different answer so now I have turned to the Creme de la Creme of niche research Market Samurai

This one does the lot, Rank tracker, Keyword research, SEO competition, Domains search, Monetization, Finding Content, Publishing that Content and Promotion. So why do I use the other tools at all?

I find that each of them does the particular bit I use them for in an easier to use format than the others, you don’t need them all but later you will see that it can help if you have access to them. You get a quicker or easier to understand result.

Also it pays to get keyword research right, take time. Get this wrong and you are going to waste a ton of time and money. So I am going to run the whole Angry Birds exercise through Market Samurai to see what happens.

I have entered the keyword Angry Birds as a new project
Chosen a phrase length of 3 to 10 words
Pressed generate keywords, there should be no surprises, they are generated from Google Keyword External – It returns 100 results
I set the match type to exact, period to daily (that’s the number of searches each day) I use the ‘Golden Rules’ default filter leaving MS to decide what is best.
I am left with just 38 so are my two domains I previously selected from Google Keywords Tool, Micro Niche Finder and Traffic Travis still on the list? ‘Angry Bird Online’ is ‘Angry Bird Online Game’ is not! Market Samurai does NOT think that is a great choice. Let’s find out why.
I run a new keyword check for ‘Angry Bird Online Game’ Ah! That’s because it only gets 43 searches a day – 1300 a month, we knew that but MS says that is not enough. Lets see if they can come up with an alternative. Back to the ‘Angry Birds’ search.
We will now eliminate all the phrases we don’t like next, the ones that do not reflect the site content and may mislead searchers, for instance if we used Angry Birds Tip but didn’t centre the site aroud giving tips serchers would soon click away. Eliminating these leaves just 10 to choose from
Some of these we haven’t seen in our previous searches for instance ‘angry birds pc’ – not available as one of the big 3 .com .org .net but a .me is available and that is said to be suited to a younger audience. Possible choice but do I like it? I will go with my gut on this one.
You can check for available domains in MS but I find that feature clumsy. I go back to GoDaddy.com for this, the Domain finding function of MS could be better.
Checked ‘angry birds PC on Traffic Travis – no go it’s a 3 star. I only accept domains which have a five star Traffic Travis rating
Hey I see http://angrybirdsonline.ws is available too – checked it on Traffic Travis – 3 star – pity, I won’t use it.
Whoa! Just seen ‘angry birds game’ looks good, there is a .me and a .ws domain available. It’s 4 star on Traffic Travis, 6608 daily searches on Google how did we miss that? Well it didn’t get listed in Micro Niche Finder, that just shows the value of double and triple checking in different systems.
Just checking it out on Google to make quite sure, only two paid ads – that’s not good but …….

I don’t know what you got from this series but what I hope you can see is that you can’t do too much research. It is THE most important part of Niche marketing.

Angry Birds isn’t an ideal Niche, the products appeal to kids and are low priced, there aren’t a lot of merchant items to promote but I was already committed with domains and a site so I am betting with get a good domain, promote it well and it will bring in money.

A Profitable Niche: You have found what appears to be a profitable niche but can people find it?

Follow me as I select real live domains to find a hot niche keyword.

In stage 1 of How to Find a Niche market I explained how I used the free Google Keywords Tool to find keyword phrases to promote my Angry Bird niche site and to get a new domain name for a companion blog.

In stage 2 I used Micro Niche Finder to Find a Profitable Keyword or two to use with my new Angry Birds Blog and my already established Instant Niche Maker site

Now in stage 3 I am goint to check out those results through Traffic Travis to see what the competition is and if I can rank high enough with these keywords to get the site on the front page of Google for that phrase.

Stage 3: A Profitable Niche Reseach with Traffic Travis

In stage 2 I had a shock, the domains I had selected for my Angry Birds niche from my manual search of Google Keywords External no longer seemed so attractive. It shows the value of careful research with the right tools. Today I am going to use the SEO analysis feature of another tool Traffic Travis

I already have an active Angry Birds instant niche maker site http://angry-birds.topsiteblog.com/ following yesterdays research I intend to change the title to ‘The angry birds nest’ as that seems like a good keyword phrase. At the moment the phrase ‘angry birds’ is a sub-domain name of my Insatnt Niche Maker site and for SEO purposes I want an Angry Birds dedicated domain name >com .net .org or .info

In stage 1 I did manual searches to start using Google Keyword External tool and had provisionally earmarked http://angrybirdonline.info and http://angrybirdsthemovie.info.

In stage 2 I changed my mind as a result of research using Micro Niche Finder and now think http://angrybirdonline.info plus http://angrybirdonlinegames.com for the blog and http://angrybirdsnest.info would be siutable for the instant niche maker site

Now in stage 3 I want to see what Traffic Travis says about their SEO possibilities, how will they compete on page. You can use T.T. free but it is so much more powerful in the paid version.

Choose the location you want, I am selecting United States,
Select top 10 results as it will be a bit quicker than 20 and give you all you need,
I pop in the phrase ‘angry bird online’ and Traffic Travis goes to work it takes a few seconds – very quick.

There is good news

The phrase is rated out of 5 stars – this one gets 4 = relatively easy
The search engine competition looks high but this is not ‘exact phrase’ so don’t fret.
None of the top 10 have the exact phrase without the ‘s’ on birds but don’t get too excited about that Google has assumed that bird means birds
A site with no page rank is in at number 7 – that’s good, we will have no page rank yet.
7 of the top 10 have zero age – thats good, neither will we but we are on level ground there
Backlinks look a bit challengingly high but one with just 110 has crept in at number 9
Several sites have edu links but number two got there without any.
Dmoz (a directory it is hard to get into) looks great, only number 2 is in it.
Yahoo directory is looking good, only number 2 and 7 are in it – it costs – a lot – so we won’t be doing that
Title NOBODY has the phrase in the title of their web page great!
Nobody has the phrase in the description of their web page – fantastic!
Nobody has used the phrase in the H2 tag of their page – wonderful.
Nothing else to worry about – good job! This look a goer.

Beware – if you are using the free version you can’t save your searches.

…… to use http://angrybirdonline.net for the Instant Niche Maker site (its $8 p.a more expensive but carries more clout with Google than a .info and http://angrybirdonlinegames.com for the Blog (easier to rank than http://angrybirdonline.net and the blog will be easier to SEO. BUT not yet I won’t buy these domains until I have yet another check.

Tomorrow I am checking the domains I selected today on Market Samurai where we can also check if there any products to sell, and find some back links

In stage 1 of How to Find a Niche market I explained how I used the free Google Keywords Tool to find keyword phrases to promote my Angry Bird niche site and to gat a new domain name for a companion blog. Google Keywords Tool is good, it’s free, but does take a lot of time and understanding. There are better ways, they aren’t free but they are worth it. Today I am going to use Micro Niche Finder to explore ‘Angry Birds’ further.

I already have an Angry Birds instant niche maker site http://angry-birds.topsiteblog.com/ ’The Complete Angry Birds’ is the provisional title of the site but I will change that to include the selected keyword. At the moment the phrase ‘angry birds’ is in my domain but as a sub-domain name and for SEO purposes I want Angry Birds included in the main domain name either as a .com .net .org or .info

I did manual searches yesterday and I have two target domains at this stage. Using Google Keyword External tool I provisionally earmarked http://angrybirdonline.info and http://angrybirdsthemovie.info now I want to make sure they are the best for my purpose.

Find a Profitable Keyword | Explore with Micro Niche Finder

Today I will use Micro Niche Finder to check out if it agrees with yesterdays research. You CAN’T do too much research at this stage, your future profitability depends on doing a thorough job.

I have described Micro Niche Finder in a post on this blog Find a Hot Niche , and you can get an overview of how it works by watching this video It’s the choice of professionals and I am going to run the two domains I have chosen through it. There is nothing more important than research and if the domains I found yesterday don’t check out I won’t buy them.

http://angrybirdonline.info I think I want this as the domain for my existing instant niche maker site The Complete Angry Birds so I will research the keyword phrase Angry Bird Online on Micro Niche Finder.

Findings

I pop in the term ‘angry bird online’ and MNF goes to work – on my connection which is a bit slow it takes a couple of minutes.

I had a few problems with MNF today and it illustrates the value of the software – it wouldn’t load well so I contacted support. Superb service. Despite Support wizard Kevin Ragsdale being on vacation he had sorted out some changes that Google had dropped in overnight. He had sorted it out and after I downloaded the new version, hey presto, Problem sorted in record time. You tell a lot about a software company from the support services and MNF are the tops.

I opened up MNF and entered my phrase ‘Angry Birds Online’ plus I put in the following filters

I only use exact phrasing. I enter ‘Angry Birds Online’ and get a result of get 777 phrases to choose from
I select to hide the results where local searches are less than 999 – my choice goes down to 282 choices
I select to hide where results phrase has less than 3 words (much easier to rank for) – goes down to 219 choices
I hide all phrases that do not contain either ‘angry bird’ or angry birds’ – choice now down to 152
I hide all phrases where the ad cost is less than 50 cents (I lose ‘Angry Birds Online’ from the results but I do want to keep it in consideration so I uncheck it, It was knockd out because PPC only cost 35 cents. That indicates the professionals are not competing for this phrase and it is a warning sign)
Down to 32 now so I will go through them by hand. And I am down to 4
Now I check the SOC (strength of competition) – now there is only one ideal phrase left ‘angry birds online game’ we should easily rank for this. ‘Angry birds online’ has a less than ideal SOC but it is also in the phrase ‘angry bird online game’ so lets see if there is a domain for that. Yes – we can get http://angrybirdsonlinegame.info .com .org or .net – only 1300 global search count but that’s ok. I am adding it to my domain purchase list.
One more check – there are 4 paid ads on Google so that o.k. – just! I will take them both.

That seems to check out with the manual method, we have found another phrase, better in some ways. Can you see how much quicker it is and how much less work there is to do?

Now I will check out ‘angry birds the movie’ – same process

I only use exact phrasing and get 438 phrases to choose from
I select to hide where local searches are less than 999 – goes down to 202 choices
I select to hide where results phrase has less than 3 words (much easier to rank for) - goes down to 167 choices
I hide all phrases that do not contain either ‘angry bird’ or angry birds’ – down to 157
I hide all phrases where the ad cost is less than 50 cents (I have to keep Angry Birds online in by unchecking it as it only has 35 cents – Down to 44
Now so I will go through them by hand. And I am down to 4
Now I check the SOC (strength of competition) – now there and here is the shock the SOC on three of them is way too high and one of those is Angry Birds the Movie Buying that on the basis of my manual search would have been a mistake – the completion is just too great. ‘Angry Birds Nest’ is in the ok range for competition but the exact phrase count is too high at 1,400,00 , there is http://angrybirdsnest.info available. So what to do?
One more check – there are zero paid ads on Google so that is bad, I think its back to the drawing board. Angry birds the movie is a no no! ! And it would have been an expensive mistake to use the manual search results.

New tactic! Now I will check out the simple phrase ‘Angry Birds’ perhaps should have done that first! Lesson learned!

I select to hide where results phrase has less than 3 words (much easier to rank for) - goes down to 176 choices
I hide all phrases that do not contain either ‘angry bird’ or angry birds’ – still to 176
I hide all phrases where the ad cost is less than 50 cents (I have to keep Angry Birds online in by unchecking it as it only has 35 cents – Down to 28
Now so I will go through them by hand. And I am down to 3
Now I check the SOC (strength of competition) – now there is another shock the SOC on two of them is way too high and the other is not too good either. the completion is huge in this niche. ‘Angry Birds Nest’ may be the answer for both
One more check – there are 0 paid ads on Google so that’s bad, I think its back to the drawing board. Angry birds the movie is a no go.

This changes things from my manual search, I am going to double check these domains on the Seo feature of Traffic Travis

I might buy them — BUT not yet — there are more checks to be done.

How to find a Niche Market: If you get this right it WILL make your fortune as an Internet marketer – my topic for today and for a few days is – Selecting a profitable Niche.

I am inviting you to Follow me as I select real live domains to find a hot niche keyword to promote a market sector have already selected – the game ‘Angry Birds’.

Today I am working on my instant niche maker Angry Birds site and I put a post up called Angry Birds in China. On the post I tell how an entrepreneurial Chinese park owner has built a real giant sling to lob Angry Bird soft toys at inflatable pigs, its fun but its unauthorised fun so what will game publisher Rovio think of that?

More important to us Affiliate marketers where did I find this news out and how can I capitalize on it to make money? I found it by registering for a ‘Google Alert’. As often as I choose, Google sends to my inbox a digest of searches they have done on whatever subject I choose. I saw this news there, researched it and easily wrote a post from that research. You can do that for your own topic here

Today I am going to explain how I selected my keyword phrase and matching domain name for my two Angry Bird sites using free tools available on line.

Why Angry Birds?

I chose Angry Birds as a market sector because it was on the national news that an Angry Birds Movie is to be made and as millions of people already play the game around the world I thought ‘lets test it out’.

What is a niche and is Angry Birds one?

Notice that I say Market sector not ‘niche’ because a niche will exist with a market sector. For instance Beauty and Health is a market sector ‘skin cream’ is a niche within that. By my definition ‘Angry Birds is not a ‘niche’ so it may help if I explain that definition.

An internet marketing niche market is a smaller section of the market which a specific product or product range is focused on; the niche chosen will define specific product features needed to promote to that smaller sector of the chosen market as well as the price range, quality and the demographics (male or female, age, income, location etc) that is intended to impact.

Niches can be ‘wide’, offering a wide selection of products to a mass audience or ‘narrow ‘ focusing on the specific needs of a small section of the market.

In the case of Angry Birds the market is ‘Games’ and ‘Angry Birds’ is a wide Niche within that market for which there is a lot of competition. My job today is to narrow that niche within the market so that I am seeking to compete is a less crowded market. I looking for a hungry crowd who are not easily finding what they are looking for on the Internet.

Setting up an Internet marketing niche is said to be an easy way to make passive online income however like most things it is only easy if you know what you are doing and you follow processes known to be successful

The good news is that there are an unlimited and ever growing number of niches to be exploited online. Finding niches is not too difficult and there are some great free online research tools to help you The first essential you need as you explore your chosen markets is to have a good understanding of keyword research.

You need to know what keywords are and why longer keyword phrases are more successful in achieving sales and are not as competitive to rank for as shorter keywords or phrases. Since longer phrase (3 words and more) are more successful (convert better) you will be more successful if you target these instead of keywords which attract more competition. Good keywords are essential since everything you do should be based on your keywords.

My Angry Birds research will establish if there is an attractive niche market available, the best keyword phrases to use to reach that market, whether there are available domain name to purchase to make process of getting our offers in front of our prospects easier and not forgetting, finding out if there are suitable and profitable products to promote in that niche.

Several billion searches are made every day using dozens of search engines to find information on the Internet. Of course Google is by far the most popular search engine, the others do command a significant market share. The search phases or keywords people use make that search will determine what they are offered. Our job is to find out what people are searching for and to offer them exactly that.

Some keywords, such as, Games have close on a billion daily searches. Someone wanting to find ‘Angry Birds’ would probably not use that keyword and if they did they wouldn’t find ‘Angry Birds’ . We are looking for keywords that will have fewer searches and can be more easily ranked for because it is not as competitive making our chances of someone finding your niche is a lot higher and therefore you will generate more revenue using the long tail keyword.

Am I starting in the right place?

No! Ideally I would start with a blank piece of paper to find the best market niche but I already have an investment of time and money in Angry Birds so today I am looking to make the best of that investment by choosing a profitable niche.

I has set up a Facebook page Angry Birds The Movie and without any advertising or promotion other than regular posting of interesting tit-bits of gossip and links to interesting pages 121 people so far have liked it but I have found that regular posting is essential. I stopped posting for a week and my monthly active users viewing stats on Facebook insights plunged by 54%! – if you pop over to take a peep do me the favour of ‘liking’ it for me! Thank you.

I have also already got http://angrybirdonlinegame.info which I put up as an instant niche maker site and I need to promote that.

Lesson 1: If you start a Facebook page up better make sure you can post to it often so you need a subject you can maintain you interest in.

Angry Birds is a popular search term in Google, that means there is an enormous market. This graph shows it situation internationally, it’s on the wane in America but enormous in the Philippines. The American market will recover though because the movie will be huge and makers Rovio are promoting a huge range of associated products worldwide.

Google make it easy to see which Internet search phrases are currently popular. Google Trends is a great free tool which will help you choose a target market or in this case tell you just how popular the Angry Birds market is and whether interest is growing or dying. At the moment Angry Birds is reaching a flat peak.

Once you know what you are searching for go to Google Keyword External . You can use this even without a Google Account but I always sign in with my Google Account details as that improves the number of results returned from 100 to 800.

GKE turned in a good result for Angry Birds 2900 exact global monthly searches, that’s a bit low so I may search for a keyword phrase from the 438 suggestions made by Google but I can cut that down a bit by setting the filters to …

All Countries, This product sells worldwide
More than 1000 local monthly searches less would be too much work for too little result
A CPC (cost per click of) $0.50 (£0.33) less shows there is no market worth competing for.
Competition Low
Match types [Exact] ( in the left sidebar) You need to know how many people are looking for that specific keyword not one just like it but different.

When that process is over the selection of alternative keywords has shrunk to 50 so let’s go through and ‘tick box’ the ones we like. Then go to the ‘more like these’ drop down box and select ‘selected’

Looking at the 13 I have left I fancied

Angry birds movie 8100 global searches
Angry birds nest 8100 global searches

So I still have 12 left, not bad but are there any domains for those keywords?

I opened up GoDaddy.com to look, I will be buying my domain there so that’s the easiest way to research.

Ideally you are looking for the .com, .org or .net domains but the important thing is to match the keyword so any of the others will do if they match exactly and a .info can be as little as $1.99 for a year.

I have ignored all the ‘also ran’ domains except .info,.com,.org and .net unless they were all gone in which case I chose the cheapest of what’s left ( .us is pretty good to but I don’t live in the us so I can’t buy one!)

I need two domain names, one to use for an ‘Angry Birds’ blog and one to use as a redirect URL for my Angry Birds Instant Niche Site

I don’t fancy the guide, tips, cheats and hints domains because that’s not what my site will do so they would attract people who wouldn’t find what they wanted what they got there so of the others let’s put in a Google.com keyword search to see what the competition is like.

I put it in Angry Birds as a Google search as an exact search i.e. I used quote marks (“”)around the keyword as follows “Angry Birds”.

Results were

“angry bird online” competition 2,550,000 paid ads 4

“angry birds movie” competition 968,000 paid ads 1

“angry birds nest ” competition 510.00 paid ads 1

“angry birds the movie” competition 2,470,000 paid ads 0

At this stage I think I will buy http://angrybirdonline.info and http://angrybirdsthemovie.info – but not yet!

That’s the FREE way folks, lengthy isn’t it and it’s not over yet, we have to find if they really are the best key words to use and if there are products to sell in this niche.
